Black Man Dies in Police Custody After Officers Strangle Him

JEFFERSON PARISH, Louisiana — After Keeven Robinson was reportedly strangled in the backyard of a home following a foot pursuit with police, Jefferson Parish Coroner Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich has determined the Black man’s death was a homicide.

In a case that is strikingly, and eerily, similar to the Stephon Clark killing, Robinson was pronounced dead while Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office had him in custody, reports Nola. Officers were chasing Robinson, 22, who they thought was part of a drug investigation.

Robinson’s cause of death was compressional asphyxia, and an autopsy revealed that he had “significant trauma to the neck and the soft tissue of the neck,” Cvitanovich said.

The four detectives involved in the suspicious arrest have been reassigned to administrative duties pending the outcome of the investigation. Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joseph Lopinto said Robinson was being chased for selling drugs. He allegedly ran from the scene when detectives noticed his vehicle and then the pursuit began.

Robinson crashed his car and jumped multiple fences before officers confronted him in the backyard of a home, then a struggle ensued. During that struggle, Lopinto said Robinson’s breathing stopped.

Robinson was transported to Ochsner Medical Center but efforts by medical personnel to revive him were unsuccessful.

The family now have some answers after demanding for transparency in the case.

“This family needs, deserves and wants answers as to what happened to Keeven,” the family’s attorney Hester Hilliard said a vigil outside Robinson’s home. “This mother needs answers as to why she has to spend Mother’s Day grieving over the loss of her child. This father needs answers as to why he can no longer hear his son’s laugh.”
