Kentucky Deputy Police Chief Instructed New Recruits to Kill Black People, Armed or Not

The institutional racism that pervades American law enforcement reared its ugly head again when it was revealed that an assistant police chief in no uncertain words told a Louisville Metro police recruit to “shoot Black people.”

“F*ck the right thing. If Black, shoot them!” says one text message from 20-year veteran Todd Shaw, who stepped down last year after an investigation was launched for his role in helping fellow officers cover-up sexual assault against teenagers.

He received the messages via Facebook from a new recruit, who asked him what to do after catching three minors with marijuana.

It is a discomforting truth that the far right and the Presidents’ compulsive fetishization of law enforcement mostly stems from the part they play in enforcing white supremacy.

This point is made clear by their wild, emotionally-charged reaction towards NFL players kneeling to protest police brutality and complete silence when high-ranking officers instruct their men to kill Black people and when teens of color are shot down without hesitation inside courthouses.

Shaw’s comments are incontrovertibly a symptom of a severe institutional decay within this nation’s law enforcement agencies. Regardless of how necessary change is in these troubling times, if Trump and his cronies have their way, it never will.
